Passionate about the practice of medicine, Abdul Rasheed Khan, MD, embraces the good of the community as inherent in the value of his work. Imparting education remains a strong interest for Dr. Abdul Rasheed Khan. Throughout his life and career, he has worked with youth groups by mentoring and helping to organize activities. Dr. Khan also serves his fellow medical professionals by teaching and supervising fellows and new physicians in the fileds of ophthalmology and vitreo-retinal surgery. Displaced for six months in Dallas, Houston and Shreveport following Hurricane Katrina, Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D. identifies with many of the struggles experienced by victims of poverty and natural disaster. He has devoted much of his own time and energy to alleviating the sufferings of others wherever possible. In 2010, Dr. Khan took sabbatical to assist underprivileged youth and their parents across the United States, devoting his time organizing and creating opportunities of academic, social, and spiritual growth. Previously, Abdul Rasheed Khan, MD, spent time in India to work with other volunteer ophthalmologists at cataract camps across the country. The effort provided assistance to those who would not have otherwise received proper medical care. Prior to his displacement by Hurricane Katrina and eventual relocation to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Abdul Rasheed Khan, MD, was employed with the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans and Dallas, Texas. He began there as a Vitreo-retinal Surgical Fellow in 2003, and eventually became a Staff Physician in the Department of Ophthalmology the following year. During his fellowship, Dr. Khan studied under the guidance of Dr. Laurence Arend and was responsible for teaching and training rotating Ophthalmology residents and fellows. As an attending-level Staff Physician, Abdul Rasheed Khan, MD, treated patients with complex eye diseases and oversaw other doctors in retinal surgery. Abdul Rasheed Khan, MD, has also been actively involved in medical research at the Louisiana State University Medical Center. His research projects have included “Beta Radiation in the Treatment of Ophthalmic Disease” and “Factors Influencing Development of Interferon Retinopathy.” Professional organizations that count Dr. Khan in their membership include the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dallas Medical Association, East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society, New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology and the Louisiana State Medical Society. Abdul Rasheed Khan, MD, currently works at the Advanced Retinal Institute Inc. (ARI), a private sub-specialty retina practice in the Chicagoland area. ARI provides highly skilled and specialized care of conditions that affect the retina, macula and vitreous. Conditions commonly evaluated and treated by Dr. Khan include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, wet and dry macular degeneration, retinal tears, detached retina, ocular trauma, ocular tumors, inflammatory ocular conditions and other highly complex disorders. Dr. Khan utilizes the most advanced techniques to provide the best treatment available today for vision threatening diseases. Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D. is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. In 2009, Dr. Khan received lifetime induction in the Cambridge Who’s Who Registry of Executives, Professionals, and Entrepreneurs. He is also a 2010 award recipient as an Ophthalmological Associate of Research to Prevent Blindness.
